Posgraduate Program in History - PGH

The Posgraduate Program in History of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco - PGH - began its activities in August of 2006 with the course of Academic Master's Degree in Social History of Regional Culture. Located in Recife, where the Portuguese colonial occupation began in America, the PGH aims to be recognized as a qualification space for political and cultural historiographic production of Pernambuco.

The Social History of Regional Culture concentration area seeks to develop research in social history and cultural history of the northeastern region of Brazil.

Research lines:

The Master's Program in History

To obtain the Master's degree in History it is required that the student has completed 40 credits, distributed as follows:

  • 8 credits in compulsory subjects;
  • 16 credits in elective subjects
  • 16 credits corresponding the dissertation.

Credits in compulsory subjects are obtained in 2 compulsory subjects of 4 credits each (Historiography and Methodology of Historical Research).

The 16 credits in elective subjects are obtained in courses offered by the Program:

Throughout the course the student must develop a Research Project. A research project is a systematic research carried out within the Program, which seeks to advance the historical knowledge, formalized through a text that presents: justification, objectives, theoretical and methodological reference, execution schedule, research sources and references.

In the third semester of the course the student must submit the research project for qualification before a research committee board. The partial results should correspond to the presentation of a systematized text with introduction plus two chapters (with the state of art, theoretical-methodological discussion and analysis of the sources).

At the end of the fourth semester the student must defend the Master Dissertation before the examining board designated for this purpose. The Master Dissertation is the final text conducted  under the guidance of a supervisor. It demonstrates the student’s ability to critically systematize the accumulated knowledge about a delimited topic and the use of scientific, technological or artistic research methods and techniques, aiming to increase historical knowledge.
